British readers have picked their 2018 favourite book at the third annual Books Are My Bag Readers Awards. The winners came from shortlists put together by booksellers.

Over 55,000 votes were cast and the nation’s favourite book was named in the Reader’s Choice category – the only one with an entirely open vote – the public got to nominate their favourite book of the year without a shortlist.

The winner was Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman. The book tells the story of a lonely woman whose whole life changes after one kind gesture

The Secret Barrister won the Best Non-Fiction book, The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton was declared the Best Novel, The Last Hedgehog by Pam Ayres topped the Best Poetry category, and The Book of Dust:La Belle Sauvage by Philip Pullman won the Young Adult award.

The Storm Keeper’s Island by Catherine Doyle topped the Young Readers category, Sarah J. Harris won the breakthrough author award, and Virago Modern Classics 40th anniversary series, designed by Hannah Wood, illustrated by Yehrin Tong, won the category for most Beautiful Book.
