With many self-published authors turning their back on the meagre royalty rates on offer from Amazon, Smashwords has stepped in to suggest new promotional tools.

Special Deals is a new merchandising feature to showcase books. All titles offered through the platform will receive automatic merchandising through the Smashwords Store’s book discovery options.

All it takes to be included in the Special Deals is to list your book at a temporarily reduced price.

Of course this would mean dropping the exclusivity deal demanded by Amazon for its select programme, but with royalties dropping to just 0.04 cents per page (meaning a 200 page book would net a writer just 8 cents!) it’s starting to look like a far less attractive way of making money from your writing.

It doesn’t mean you need to stop using Amazon to sell books as a secondary channel.
